Unseeded player Conan Whitehead caused a monumental shock as he defeated 2018 Lakeside finalist Mark McGeeney in what could be a career defining performance for the Kent based star. Whitehead’s heavy scoring and pinpoint accuracy on the doubles would all come together at the perfect time, as he stormed past the number one seed in front of a packed Lakeside stage.
Checkouts of 60 and 119 closed out a sensational first set for the former World Trophy quarter-finalist, taking it 3-1. He would seize the second set by the same scoreline as missed darts at the double cost the number one seed, Whitehead cleaning up to double his advantage.
A 105 checkout on the bullseye would break the McGeeney throw as the Stockport thrower could only stand and admire the terrific Whitehead performance. Two more astonishing finishing shots were to follow, an 89 on the bullseye and then an 86 on double four to confirm his place in the quarter-finals and close out an unbelievable performance from the Kent based star.
