The round of the 16 action kicks off on Wednesday afternoon as the Men’s BDO World Professional Darts Championship continues at the Lakeside Country Club.
13:00 – Wesley Harms Vs Willem Mandigers
We go ‘double Dutch’ in the opening match of the afternoon session as Wesley Harms takes on Willem Mandigers. On the face of it, the duo had tough opening round ties against Tony O’Shea and Paul Hogan respectively.
With the Lakeside crowd fully behind BDO veteran O’Shea, Harms had to pull out his best darts to defeat ‘Silverback’. Mandigers had an easier time on stage as Hogan failed to get out of first gear. Harms has the better record of the two in head to head competition and has previously made two Lakeside semi-final appearances.
14:45 – Trina Gulliver MBE Vs Karolina Podgorska
In the final women’s encounter of the first round of matches, ten-time champion of the world Trina Gulliver takes on Lakeside debutant Karolina Podgorska. Despite having little pedigree on the big stage, the Polish thrower is a two-time Romanian Open winner. But she does lack the mountain of experience that her opponent possesses. Gulliver did not win a BDO ranking event in 2018 but made it into double figures with her semi-final appearances.
15:15 - Michael Unterbuchner Vs Wayne Warren
Wayne Warren faces German star Michael Unterbuchner in one of the most hotly anticipated clashes of the second round. Warren, 58, recorded a 98 average against Mark Layton, the highest of the opening four days. His number five seeded opponent was pushed all the way by Justin Thompson in round one, so will need to up his performance if he is to defeat former quarter-finalist Warren.
19:00 – Mark McGeeney Vs Conan Whitehead
BDO number one Mark McGeeney opens the evening session against ‘The Barbarian’ Conan Whitehead. Last year’s finalist kicked off proceedings on Saturday after as he defeated the highly fancied Derk Telnekes. Whitehead came through a bludgeoning battle with BDO veteran Martin Phillips on his 16th appearance at the Lakeside. ‘The Gladiator’ last defeated Whitehead at the 2017 Swiss Open, but with a longer format in place, this one could go all the way.
20:45 – Jim Williams Vs Dean Reynolds
After sneaking through their respective first round encounters, two of Wales’ finest dartists meet in the second round on Wednesday evening. Reynolds has decent record against his highly ranked opponent, winning ties at the BDO World Trophy and Scottish in the past 18 months. Williams game has come on a great deal in the past year, and will go into the clash as a heavy favourite.
22:30 – Richard Veenstra Vs Scott Waites
Wednesday’s action is rounded off with one of the stand-out clashes of the last 16 as two-time former champion Scott Waites takes on Richard Veenstra. The latter was pushed all the way by Nigel Heydon in the previous round as we went all the way to a sudden death leg. Waites on the other hand, cruised past Jeffrey van Egdom to reach this stage and will fancy his chances against ‘Flyers’.
