Last year’s semi-finalist Michael Unterbuchner got his 2019 BDO World Professional Darts Championship campaign up and running as he defeated Australia’s Justin Thompson. The German thrower enjoyed a sensational year on the circuit, lifting himself up to number five in rankings.

‘T-Rex’ will be looking to emulate his BDO World Trophy performance from 2018, where he made the final in Preston. He got up and running with a win over a gutsy Justin Thompson.

After a nervy opening to the match, Unterbuchner took out 68 for the first set. Thompson would draw level, before the German regained the lead with a 3-0 victory in the third set of the match.

Unterbuchner would push all the way as he looked to creep over the line, a 121 and then a 101-check-out taking Thompson to a final leg in set four, but he couldn’t break to take the match.

He would finally get the job done against a plucky opponent, as a 66 checkout saw him safely into the second round.
