The BDO tour headed to Vienna on Saturday for the CAT D ranked Men’s and Ladies Austrian Open.
In the Men’s event, Germany’s Michael Unterbuchner headed the seeds in a field over 200 men, with England’s John Scott as second seed and Ireland’s Francis Carragher seeded third.
Scott was an early casualty, losing in the last 128 4-3 to Patrick Tringler, whilst Carragher missed out on a last 8 spot losing 4-3 to number 14 seed József Rucska. Unterbuchner’s run ended in the quarter-finals as the unseeded Markus Straub took the match on the deciding leg 5-4.
The semi-final line up saw Straub face Belgium’s Jeffrey Van Egdom, with Straub beating the number four seed 5-3 to progress to the final. Number six seed Sven Verdonck faced Áron Boroczi in the second semi-final, with Verdonck moving into his first BDO ranked final of 2019, beating his opponent 5-1.
The final saw Belguim’s Verdonck claim his best result of the year, beating Straub 6-2 in the final to take the 2019 Austrian Open Championship.
A lower turnout in the ladies event saw the top four BDO ranked players in attendance seeded; Andreea Brad, Vivien Czipó, Jana Kanovska and Kaisu Rekinen.
All four seed comfortably progressed into the last eight, with the unseeded Jasmin Schnier beating Brad 4-2 and Czipó losing 4-0 to 2019 Slovakian Open semi-finalist Jitka Císarová. Kanovska and Rekinen both won their last eight matches to move into the semi-finals.
Both semis went 4-2, with Finland’s Rekinen beating Schnier and Císarová winning over fellow Czech Republic player Kanovska.
The final saw Rekinen take her second title of 2019, beating Císarová 5-2. The result should see the Finnish thrower move several place up the BDO rolling table to move into the top 40.
