Paul Hogan set up a first round meeting with Willem Mandigers as he breezed past an out of sorts Wez Newton in the opening match of the evening session.
In one of the standout ties of the preliminary round, Hogan would seize the early initiative, taking the first set 3-0. On his Lakeside debut, Newton settled onto the Frimley stage during the second set, stealing it 3-2 in a last leg decider.
Hogan has taken plenty of scalps in his illustrious career, and after taking the third set with relative ease, he seemed to be sailing through to the first round proper with a win over former PDC top 10 player Newton.
A 72 checkout gave ‘Crocodile Dundee’ the advantage in the fourth set as Newton struggled to find his best darts. He will now face Dutchman Willem Mandigers in round one on Monday afternoon.
