Lisa Ashton’s three-year unbeaten run on the Lakeside stage came to an end against Japan’s rising star Mikuru Suzuki. ‘The Lancashire Rose’ failed to settle against a comfortable looking Suzuki on the Frimley Green stage.
‘The Miracle’ was out of the blocks quickly against the number one seed reeling off the first two legs to put Ashton under immediate pressure. But the four-time champion would fight back, checking out on double three to send the set to a deciding leg. Suzuki would close out the set, holding her nerve to put a first foot into the quarter-final’s.
The two players exchanged breaks of throw in opening two legs of the third set, but it would be Ashton who would seize the advantage. Despite this the set would again go a deciding leg as Suzuki nailed tops to make it two a piece.
Japanese star Suzuki would close out the contest in what would be a nervy final leg. Ashton missing darts at the double as the 35-year-old took out double ten with her final dart to seal a career defining victory at the home of world darts.
