An in depth preview into the first days matches from the 2019 Lakeside World Professional Darts Championship.
13:00 - Mark McGeeney Vs Derk Telnekes
Mark McGeeney will take on Dutchman Derk Telnekes in the opening match of the 2019 BDO World Professional Darts Championship. ‘The Gladiator’, will be going in search of his first World Championship victory after last year’s final defeat to Glen Durrant. The two met three times in 2018, with McGeeney holding the narrow advantage in terms of wins. The 46-year-old defeated Telnekes on route to his Turkish Open win, where he would beat fellow countryman Wesley Harms in the final.
14:15 - Jim Widmayer Vs Nigel Heydon
In the second match of the afternoon England star Nigel Heydon will kick-off his 2019 campaign against two-time former Lakeside competitor Jim Widmayer. Having come through the play-offs in Bridlington earlier in the year, Heydon will be confident going into his clash with the American ace. The two have never met in a major competition so we could be in for an2 interesting first meeting between the two on Saturday.
15:30 - Lisa Ashton Vs Mikuru Suzuki
In one of the most hotly anticipated matches of the opening day, four-time women’s champion Lisa Ashton takes on Japan’s rising star Mikuru Suzuki. The two last met in the 2017 Winmau World Masters at the last 16 stage, with Suzuki running out 4-2 winner on that occasion. Whilst many are touting Suzuki for a deep run on her Lakeside debut, ‘The Lancashire Rose’ is unbeaten on the Frimley Green stage since 2016. This promises to be an outstanding contest.
16:00 - Martin Phillips Vs Conan Whitehead
On his 16th BDO World Professional Darts Championship appearance, Martin Phillips faces Conan Whitehead. After making a quarter-final appearance at November’s Finder Masters, Whitehead will enter the biggest event of the year with confidence a plenty. Phillips, 58, made semi-final appearances at the Lakeside in 2010 and 2011, but will be hoping to make a World Championship final for the first time in his illustrious career. The Welshman holds the advantage in terms of head to head meetings, but after finding his feet on the circuit in 2018, Whitehead poses a considerable threat to the former Winmau World Master.
19:00 - Paul Hogan Vs Wez Newton
In the opening match of the evening session, Paul Hogan takes on Lakeside debutant Wez Newton. Despite both having been playing for well over a decade, they have only met once in major competition. Basingstoke thrower Hogan was the victor on that occasion, as he defeated ‘The Warrior’ 4-2 in June’s England Open. ‘Crocodile Dundee’ first competed in the BDO World Professional Darts Championship in 1995, where he lost out to Richie Burnett in the quarter-finals. He was defeated by Jelle Klaasen at the same stage in 2006, both players would go on to lift the trophy in that year.
20:15 - Sharon Prins vs Roz Bulmer
The Netherland’s Sharon Prins and England’s Roz Bulmer will meet for the third time this season as they clash on the opening day at the Lakeside Country Club. Bulmer whitewashed Prins 4-0 at the World Trophy earlier in the year, but ‘The Racing Angel’ returned the favour two months later at the German Masters, again at the quarter-final stage. Both players will enter the contest with confidence a plenty and the tide could turn either way with this one.
20:45 - Mal Cuming Vs Justin Thompson
Australian duo Mal Cuming and Justin Thompson will face off in the preliminary round of this year’s Lakeside World Professional Darts Championship. With both players being from Victoria, they are sure to have met plenty of times on the Australian circuit. They even contested the Geelong Dart Club Classic final in 2018 but the two have never met in a professional competition. After Cuming progressed through the Darts Australia rankings, they are set for a big first meeting at the home of world darts.
22:00 - Wesley Harms Vs Tony O’Shea
Three-time BDO World Championship runner-up Tony O’Shea will take on old adversary Wesley Harms to round off the opening day at the 2019 BDO World Professional Darts Championships. ‘The Silverback’s’ most notable victories over the highly rated Dutchman came in the 2012 and 2013 editions of the tournament, where O’Shea defeated Harms to make the final. ‘Sparky’ will take confidence from another impressive year of darts action but will have to be at his best as he takes on one of BDO’s longest serving competitors.
