The action at the Circus Tavern concluded on Sunday evening, with John O'Shea and Lisa Ashton being crowned the BDO one80 L-style World Masters for 2019, in two of the most exciting finals the event has seen in it's storied history.
Lisa Ashton retained her World Masters crown as she defeated Anastasia Dobromyslova in a nail-biting encounter that went all the way to a deciding leg.
The opening two legs would go with throw before the Russian found a pivotal break, taking out 90 on double 15. Four more holds of throw would follow as the averages remained in the mid eighties. With Dobromyslova just one away from victory, Ashton hit the turbo.
Four ton plus scores followed by a 36 checkout got the game back on throw and handed ‘The Lancashire Rose’ a chance to throw for the match. She obliged, throwing a superb 14-darter to be crowned a three-time World Master, and retain the title for a first time in her career.
In the men’s competition, Scott Waites reached the final after recording a routine victory over Wales’ Michael Warburton. The Yorkshireman smasehed in two 15-darters to take the lead early, but Warburton would reply by taking the second set on throw.
From then on it would be a show of dominance from Waites, who took six of the next seven legs, racing into a 4-1 advantage. There would be a brief resurgence from ‘Warby’ in the final set, but Waites would close it out to reach the final.
It was a similar story for John O’Shea as he recorded a victory by the same margin as his final adversary. He would race into an early lead, averaging a mighty 112 in the first set, but s we’ve seen throughout the weekend the Vandenbogaerde is a tough nut to crack as he returned the favour.
The key to victory for O’Shea would be his consistency on tops and tens, persistent pummelling of the outer ring would prove too much for the number 12 seed as he progressed to a final meeting with ‘Scotty-2-Hotty’.
It would be John O’Shea who would be crowned the 2019 one80 L-style World Masters men’s champion as he defeated Scott Waites 6-4 in a thrilling final.
The Irishman would continue his momentum from the semi-finals as he took the opening two sets in double quick fashion, Waites not able to notch a leg.
But as he has done so often over the years, the experienced Waites came straight back, the pair going into the mid-game interval back on throw with O’Shea leading 3-2.
The pair would exchange blows as the game entered the latter stages, the unseeded O’Shea unable to shake off the attentions of his World Champion opponent. The crucial moment would come in the tenth set of the match, O’Shea breaking the throw for the first time since the second set, to put Waites under immediate pressure.
Despite ‘The Joker’ having a shot at 100 for the match, Waites would return to take out 80 and send the set to a decider. This time O’Shea would make no mistake, nailing his favourite double ten for a first major title in the BDO.
