2010 BDO LAKESIDE WORLD PROFESSIONAL DARTS CHAMPIONSHIPS

LAKESIDE COUNTRY CLUB, FRIMLEY GREEN, SURREY

SATURDAY, JANUARY 2 to SUNDAY, JANUARY 10, 2010

The 2010 Lakeside World Professional Men’s Champion will receive a cheque for £100,000, and the total prize fund for the Championships will be £325,000 – making it the richest ever in the history of the most prestigious Championships in World Darts.

Players from over thirty countries around the globe have competed for the right to be in the final field of 32 men and 8 women in the BBC televised Championships from January 2nd to 10th, 2010.

England's Ted Hankey, the reigning and double Men’s World Champion (2000 & 2009) starts his defence with a tough First Round match against fellow countryman and good friend Gary Robson. Women’s World Champion Francis Hoenselaar of The Netherlands, has a repeat of the 2009 final when she meets her greatest rival Trina Gulliver the seven-times Women’s World Champion (2001-2007) in her opening Quarter-Final.

Martin Adams will set a record in 2010 for competing in more World Championships than any other player – a total of 17 consecutive Lakeside World Championships since making his debut in 1994.  He has an outstanding Lakeside record topped by being crowned World Champion in 2007. He was runner-up in 2005 and has reached five Semi-Finals (1995, 2002, 2006, 2008 & 2009) and three Quarter-Finals (1994, 1996 & 1999).

Darryl Fitton has hit form at the right time by winning the last major on the BDO/WDF 2009 calendar - Holland’s Zuiderduin Masters three weeks before Lakeside. Not only was he crowned Champion, but he also hit a perfect 9 Dart 501 leg on his road to the final. There has still only been one 9-Darter in the World Pro – by Paul Lim in 1990 – and if Darryl can achieve the feat at Lakeside 2010 he will receive a cheque for £52,000!

The 33rd BDO World Professional Darts Championships (1978-2010) maintain their proud history and tradition with a line-up that includes World Champions, top ranked BDO and WDF players (men and women) and eleven players who will be making their debuts on the most famous stage in World Darts.

There will be eleven new faces:

Men:

Dave Prins (Eng), Scott Mitchell (Eng), Ian White (Eng), Paul Carter (Eng), Robbie Green (Eng), Anthony Fleet (Australia), and Martin McCloskey (Rep of Ire).

Women:

Irina Armstrong (Russia), Linda Ithurralde (Eng), Deta Hedman (Eng) and Rhian Edwards (Wales).

Three of the Men make their debuts as Seeds: Dave Prins is No.7 Seed, Scott Mitchell is No.14 Seed and Ian White is No.16 Seed.

For the women, Russia’s  BDO and WDF No.1 Irina Armstrong makes her Lakeside debut as No.3 Seed and is the second Russian woman to reach the finals since 2001. Deta Hedman only returned to the BDO in January 2009 and after winning several titles in the last 12 months is considered a real favourite.

Two debutants: Scott Mitchell and Paul Carter come from the same village, Bransgore on the edge of the New Forest on the Dorset/Hampshire border.  Less than 5,000 people live there and they are two best friends playing for the same county – Dorset - which has never previously been represented at Lakeside.

Paul Carter donated a kidney to his older sister, Donna, five years ago and as a direct consequence had to stop playing darts for two years.

Earlier this year, his wife Caroline, gave birth to twin boys (following her final IVF treatment) and they were born at 28 weeks -  three months premature!

Born on April 16th, 2009 just 2 minutes apart: Ashton arrived first and weighed 3lbs.3ozs and Oliver was 3lbs.12ozs.

Scott Mitchell played in the same school football team as Jamie Redknapp, and his dad Harry Redknapp (now manager of Tottenham Hotspur FC) used to drive the team to away matches in the Bournemouth FC mini-bus when he was manager of the club.

An ex Moto-Cross rider, Scott has his own landscape gardening business and one of his clients is Paul Denning, manager of the Suzuki Moto GP Team.

Scott’s father taught David Essex to ride a motorbike for the film Silver Dream Racer in a field opposite the Mitchell’s house, and in return Essex played Father Xmas at Scott’s Sunday School!

Two more players come from the same town, albeit a bigger one, are Stephen Bunting and Dave Chisnall, who both live is St. Helens.

For the first time ever, there are two brothers playing at Lakeside:

Steve West and Tony West.

Both Northern Ireland and the Republic of Ireland are represented by Darryl Gurney and Martin McCloskey respectively.

  • Since the late Leighton Rees of Wales became the very first World Professional Champion in 1978 (winning just £3,000) there has been a total of twenty different Men’s World Professional Champions and, since 2001, three different Women’s World Professional Champions.

The extensive TV coverage by BBC Sport is complemented by Red Button and online coverage of every dart thrown for digital TV viewers. In addition, thanks to deals signed by the BDO’s international TV distribution partner BBC Worldwide, coverage of the event will be seen throughout Europe on Eurosport, and throughout Asia on Eurosport Asia.
